Calgary courses are available for registration on the CPS-ECP national web site in the Course Catalog https://www.cps-ecp.ca/contact/squadron-locations/course-catalog/.  Payment is by credit card or PayPal.  On the registration page for the course you want, scroll down to the Calgary Squadron, click the radio button, and follow the prompts.  You do not need to be a CPS-ECP member to take a course, however, most courses fees are discounted for CPS-ECP members.  If you do not yet have a CPS account, you will be prompted to create a profile for yourself before course registration can begin.

Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card?

It's for all boats with engines.  Regardless of boat length or engine horsepower, all motorized boat operators in Canada are required by law to have a boating license (PCOC).

There is no hard copy manual available with the self study course. All materials are on-line.  

No minimum age required to attain this certification.

The Maritime Radio course teaches emergency radio procedures and everyday operating techniques. Learn all about the uses of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases, as well as Digital Selective Calling and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, (DSC/GMDSS). All mariners, including recreational boaters, will want to take advantage of the many features and capabilities of this innovative form “automatic” radio. Secure your lifeline. Be sure that you and your family take the Maritime Radio course. This complete package will prepare you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) with DSC Endorsement exam which is included as part of this courses. To operate a maritime radio, you need the certificate. It's the law!  This radio course is intended for recreational boaters and not commercial boat operators, who would need the ROC(MC).

The final exam and calling testing is done orally one-on-one with a Recognized Examiner via video conferencing.  We use Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Cost includes final exam, ISED licensing fee, and wallet card mailed out upon successful completion of the course.

Boating 2 (on-line version) is delivered in the ‘blended’ format, meaning it is partly self-study on the Moodle platform available 24/7, along with scheduled weekly class time with your instructor for Q and A.  The Moodle platform https://moodle.org/ is the world's most popular web-based learning management system.  The final exam is done on-line.

In the second of our Boating Series, you are introduced to the art of navigation, anchoring, ropes, lines and knots – not to mention what to expect when the boat is moving under power. This course also has a number of optional topics that will be taught depending on your interests; these include towing, trailering and a check list for layup and launch.

A student study kit will be supplied to the student, which includes a textbook (in hard copy or digital format) and a package of other documents.

For those students enrolled in the on-line sessions for Boating 2, we normally attempt to arrange in-person sessions with a local tutor to cover practical skills like knot tying.  During these Covid times, those skills sessions are taught over a live video link using software such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

Boating 3 – Introduction to Marine Navigation – The third course in our series explores navigation further as you learn how to plot and label on paper charts as well as what the skipper should be doing before setting out and when under way, handling a boat under sail as well as your environmental responsibilities and electrical hazards. This course also has a number of optional topics that will be taught depending on your interests; these include tides and currents, canals and locks, and collision regulations.

A student study kit will be supplied to the student, which includes a textbook (in hard copy or digital format) and a package of other documents.

For those students enrolled in the on-line sessions for Boating 3, we normally attempt to arrange in-person sessions with a local tutor to cover practical skills like chart reading and use of dividers and chart plotter.  During these Covid times, those skills sessions are taught over a live video link using software such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

Do you know what to do if a boat on fire calls you for help?  Can you deal with emergencies on your own boat?  Build your confidence on the water, and make your boating a safe and fun experience, by taking this CPS-ECP Course.   In Boating 4, you will learn how to cope with these situations, as well as many other aspects of boating, such as relative bearings, knots and splicing, medical emergencies, coping with adverse weather, and much more.

A student study kit will be supplied to the student, which includes a textbook (in hard copy or digital format) and a package of other documents.

For those students enrolled in the on-line sessions for Boating 4, we normally attempt to arrange in-person sessions with a local tutor to cover practical skills like advanced knot tying.  During these Covid times, those skills sessions are taught over a live video link using software such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

As of the writing of this article (2021 Feb) this course is only available in Calgary in classroom format.  Our classroom experiences are suspended until Covid restrictions are lifted.

Knowledge of the basics of navigation and planning cruises on a maritime chart is just the start.  Expand that knowledge by using a variety of electronic devices to chart your course and enable you to plan your course under tidal, current and windy conditions.  By learning more about dead reckoning, fixes and running fixes in Boating 5, you will attain a high degree of proficiency in navigating through coastal waters.  In the CPS-ECP AP Course we cover GPS, Chart Plotters, Radar, SONAR, Autopilots and more.

A student study kit will be supplied to the student, which includes a textbook (in hard copy or digital format) and a package of other documents.

For those students enrolled in the on-line sessions for Boating 5, we normally attempt to arrange in-person sessions with a local tutor to cover practical skills like navigational chart plotting.  During these Covid times, those skills sessions are taught over a live video link using software such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

This course uses the study material from the United States Power Squadrons (USPS).

It is presented in an on-line format in a scheduled weekly lecture style with a real time instructor, using web conferencing software such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

Boating 6 includes navigation techniques using the sun.

The succeeding course, Boating 7 ‘Senior Navigator’, includes nav skills using the moon, stars, and planets.

When the GPS ceases to work, be guided by the sun. Boating 6 is the first of a two-course program of offshore navigation for the recreational boater. Learn to use a marine sextant to derive lines of position and a running fix from sights on the sun. When you are boating offshore, remember that GPS is not infallible, nor always available. Be confident when no aids to navigation or land objects are in sight.A student study kit will be supplied to the student, which includes a hard copy textbook and a package of other documents.

For those students enrolled in the on-line sessions for Boating 6, we normally attempt to arrange in-person sessions with a local tutor to cover practical skills like using a sextant and the Universal Plotting Sheet.  During these Covid times, those skills sessions are taught over a live video link using software such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
